EXPN.com Aug. 18, 2000
SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco native and crowd favorite Chris Bloch had problems finishing at the top of wall at the wrong time of the day. During the championship race, he wasn't able to reach the button, to allow Ukraine's Valdimir Zakharov, ranked No. 2 in the world, to take the gold in the men's sport climbing speed competition.
Zakharov and Bloch, together, broke the previous world record four times in today's competition. Zakharov's winning time of 11.58 seconds now stands as the new record.
Poland's Tomasz Oleksy won the bronze medal by defeating Aleei Gadeev of Russia in the consolation race.
Hendrawati wins in upset in Women's Sport Climbing
Etti Hendrawati doesn't compete much in major competition, but today she basically came out of no where to beat the top two ranked women's speed climbers in the world to win the X Games gold medal in Women's Sport Climbing Speed. Hendrawati, who won a bronze medal in this event a year ago, was not ranked in the world this season. Before today, she only competed in the Indonesian Federation in 2000, after winning last year's Asian X Games. The 25-year-old climber from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, defeated top ranked Olga Zakharova of Ukraine in the semifinals before beating second-ranked Elena Repko, also of Ukraine, to the top of the 60-foot climbing wall in the final round. Zakharova took home the bronze medal by defeating fellow Ukrainian Alena Ostapenko in the consolation race. ![]() | |||||||||||||||
