"There's nothing like the smell of two stroke oil in the morning" was a line overheard in San Francisco last June which pretty much sums up the mind set around this sport. This is an event that embodies what the X Games are at it's purest: huge air time and loads of adrenaline. It's also a sport that is still in its infancy, progressing constantly; the unpredictability adds to the excitement exponentially. Summer X 1999 marked Moto X's first appearance of international magnitude and was a huge success. To sum it all up, the crowds were big and the riders went bigger than expected. The event was deemed a success and returns for 2000 along with a new event; the Step Up.
Freestyle:
The object of Freestyle is to go as big as humanly possible on a 250cc motor cross bike, pull a death defying trick mid air, and hopefully land in one piece. Some of the tricks: a can-can which is kicking your feet over the side of the bike in mid air, similar to the 30's dance move. A coffin, which is preformed by laying flat on the bike while mid air and arising to grab the handle bars just before landing. Combine these tricks with a no handed lander (figure it out) and you've got a stellar run going. Until weeks ago no one has successfully executed a back flip or a 360-degree spin. Carey Hart became the first rider to break that barrier successfully throwing a back flip in competition, but not quite riding it away with it! Congratulations Carey. Word on the street is that other riders have been trying them in secret locations around the country and it won't be long until they follow. Spectators at the Moto X Freestyle comp on Sunday are in for one historic competition.
Step Up:
A contest new to this year's event, Moto X's own version of the high jump. Be on the look out for some high flyin' action when Moto's best show how high they can go. The format of the event is a reverse limbo with riders attempting to launch their bikes up-and-over a high bar. The bar is raised after every round until a winner is determined. This contest has been a big hit at the LXD Freeride tour all over the United States and should be a great addition the the X Games.![]() | |||||||||||||||
