As announced to all riders at the 2001 Summer X Games, qualifying for 12 competitors for Winter 2002 freestyle moto-x at X Games is as follows:

1. Automatically qualified: winners of Gold Medals in freestyle moto-x competition in calendar year 2001 (which includes Mike Jones, Travis Pastrana, Tommy Clowers and Kenny Bartram.

2. The highest ranking six riders exclusive of the above in the WFA Big Air standings based on results of two nights of competition at the ESPN FreeRide Moto-X Championships being held Oct. 5 & 6 in Nashville, TN

3. Two riders voted in by the WFA competition committee, based on status as international competitors and/or riders who are unable to compete in Nashville due to injury.
